The Future of PE: Learn Through Play

Globally, researchers have begun to emphasise the importance of play in developing children’s cognitive, physical, social and emotional well-being. This research suggests that it takes over 400 repetitions of an action for our brain to create new connections known as synapses. However, if this action is conducted through initiated play, it only takes 10 to 20 repetitions, enabling us to generate new levels of understanding quickly. Learning through play is our superpower! But how do the children of 2022 play? We live in the age of technology, it seems that almost every month there is a new technology which can be leveraged to promote learning through play. Why not take advantage of this to help transform PE? Making it more engaging and meaningful and enabling our young learners to develop their superpowers better.

Imagine with me for a moment...

where will technology take us in the next 10 to 20 years from now. "Technology is evolving and we as educators need to evolve with it and use it to enhance learning"

Presented - Dulwich College in Singapore - Teach UP Event 2022

We live in an era of technology and we all seen in the last few years how we need to be adaptable and open minded and who knows where technology will take us in the next 10 or 20 years. We all seen and experienced the change caused by the pandemic and how it affected us as PE Educators.  What I am trying to say here either we embrace change or we can fight it, but no matter what, change is always happening, sometimes change can be a good thing as it will bring new opportunities and new experiences, but at the same time, change can be a difficult thing as it will make it challenging for us as PE educators to adapt our PE lessons. This is why as a Lifelong learner and PE educator I believe that we should always be looking for new ways such as integrating technology into teaching to help us grow and become more adaptable to change.

Ways to leverage Technology to Promote learning through Play in Primary PE

The children of today’s definition of play are often means being in front of a screen. In my experience I observed some children who are reluctant to participate in PE because it is out of their comfort zone. My solution to this has been to be bring technology into the sports hall alongside Play to create a familiar environment. I believe today's children are exposed and will always be exposed to technology in the future, as technology is becoming more and more part of our daily life. So my question here is, why not take advantage of technology to enhance students' learning through play? Some of you might be wondering, but why should we expose our children at school to technology in PE, they already get enough screen time, pe should be screen free? Technology can be a good thing if it used appropriately in teaching PE.
